Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University

Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU) is one of the oldest agricultural institutes in Bangladesh. It was established in 1938 by then chief minister of undivided Bengal Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq. At that time is was not a university, it was Bengal Agricultural Institute. In 2001 National Parliament passed Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University Act 2001 to establish the university. This university has thirty six departments under four faculties.

Bangladesh University of Professionals

Bangladesh University of Professionals was established in 2008 to offer various courses to military and non military students. This university is run by Bangladesh armed forces and its campus is located at Mirpur cantonment, Dhaka. Currently this university offers BBA and MBA course under business faculty. National University

National University is not like traditional universities, it is an affiliating university established in 1992 by the National Parliament to supervise undergraduate and post graduate courses in government, non-government colleges and other institutes of the country. Before the establishment of National University, theses colleges and institutes were affiliated by various public universities. This university does not have any campus or class room like traditional universities. The offices of the university are located at Gazipur near the capital Dhaka.

Jahangirnagar University is one of the most renowned public Universities of Bangladesh. It is the only residential University of the country. It was established in the year 1970. Eden Girls College

Eden Girls' College originated from a school for Brahmo girls established by Shubha Sadhini Sabha (a philanthropic society) in Dhaka in 1873. Initially, the classes of the school were conducted in a private house at Farashganj. In 1878, the school was merged with another private girls' school to form Dhaka Female School. The same year the school administration took the initiative to bring it under government management and proposed it be called Eden Girls' School after the Lieutenant Governor Sir Ashley Eden. Given its new status, it started functioning at a new location at Laxmibazar.

Eden Girls College

Dhaka University

A delegation lead by Nabab Sir Salimullah, Nabab Syed Nawab ali Chowdhury and  Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Haque demanded a University in this region for the Muslims of East Bengal to the Viceroy Lord Hardinze  when he came to Dhaka on 31^st January, 1912. Mr. Hardinze could realize the fact and declared to establish a University in Dhaka.

The Bengal Government organized a 13-member committee chaired by Barrister Robert Nathan. The remarkable recommendations of this committee were:

• The University will be controlled by the Government and will be managed by the Govt. Officers.
• It will be a residential academic University.
• Islamic studies and research will be included in its syllabus.

The Viceroy Lord Chamesford made a committee for designing the academic functions of Dhaka University; Dr. M.E. Saddler, the Vice-Chancellor of University of Leads was appointed as the Chairman of this committee. It was known as “Kolkata University Commission” .The Commission gave 2 important recommendations:

• Dhaka University would not have any authority of affiliations; it will be a unique educational institution.
• The University will be an autonomous body.

After a lot of discussions and planning, it was decided in the Indian Parliament that the Dhaka University Bill would be sent to the select committee on 12 February, 1920 and it was unanimously converted into an act on 18^th March. The Honorable Governor General approved “The University Act” on 23^rd March, 1920; this decision made the way easier for establishing the University. As a result, Dhaka University officially started on 1^st July, 1921.

In course of time, Dhaka University has become one of the best Universities in South Asia. Dhaka University has played a very important role in our Language movement, Liberation war and Anti autocracy movement. This university has also successfully rendered a lot of contributions in the fields of social and cultural affairs, sports, research, science and technology.

At present, Dhaka University has 12 faculties, 52 departments, 8 institutes, 34 research centres, 1545 students, 30000 students, 18 residential halls and 2 hostels.

701 teachers are PhD holders in Dhaka University.
